5A – Affirmative and Negative Sentences

1. Affirmative (Positive Sentences)

We use the present simple to describe daily routines and general truths.

It’s the same for I, you, we, they.

The Form:

Subject (I/You/We/They) + Verb + …

We	drink	water with meals.
They	go	to school at 8 a.m.

2. Negative

To make negative sentences, we use don’t (do not) + base verb.

The Form:

Subject (I/You/We/They) + do not (don’t) + Verb + …

We	don’t	play	tennis.
They	don’t	watch	TV in the morning.

5B – Questions and Short Answers

1. Yes/No Questions

To make yes/no questions, we use do at the beginning of the sentence.

The Form:

Do + subject (I/You/We/They) + verb + … ?

The answer must be Yes or No.

Do	Subject	Verb	Answer
Do	you	like coffee?	Yes, I do / No, I don’t.
Do	I	need a ticket?	Yes, you do / No, you don’t.
Do	we	have homework?	Yes, we do / No, we don’t.
Do	they	eat fish?	Yes, they do / No, they don’t.

💡 Tip

Use the A–S–I rule for questions:

• A = Auxiliary (do)
• S = Subject (I, you, etc.)
• I = Infinitive (eat, go, have, etc.)
