UNIT 2 – Grammar Rules

2A. Verb BE (Plural): we / you / they

1. Affirmative (Positive Sentences)

For we, you, and they, we use are.

Subject Full Form Short Form
WeWe areWe’re
YouYou areYou’re
TheyThey areThey’re

Examples:

  • We are students → We’re students
  • You are late → You’re late
  • They are from Germany → They’re from Germany
⚠ Important
  • You can be singular or plural.
  • They can mean people or things.

2. Negative Sentences

Add not after are.

Subject Full Form Short Form
WeWe are notWe’re not / We aren’t
YouYou are notYou’re not / You aren’t
TheyThey are notThey’re not / They aren’t

Examples:

  • We are not English → We aren’t English
  • You are not in class 5 → You’re not in class 5
  • They are not ready → They aren’t ready

✔ Both negative forms are correct.

3. Questions with We / You / They

Put are before the subject.

Statement Question
We’re late.Are we late?
You’re ready.Are you ready?
They’re from Italy.Are they from Italy?

Examples:

  • Are we in the right room?
  • Are you students?
  • Are they teachers?

4. Short Answers (Plural)

Use Yes/No + subject + verb.

Question Positive Negative
Are we late? Yes, we are. No, we aren’t.
Are you from Turkey? Yes, we are. No, we aren’t.
Are they new? Yes, they are. No, they aren’t.
⚠ Important

Use subject + are / aren’t in short answers.

5. Word Order in Questions (Plural)

Statement Question
They’re from Russia. Are they from Russia?

✔ Always put the verb before the subject in questions.
