11A — Past Simple: Regular Verbs

  • We use the past simple tense to describe finished actions in the past.

Examples:

  • I watched a movie last night.
  • They worked until 6 p.m.
  • The past form of regular verbs ends in -ed.

The Form:

Subject + verb (ed) + …

Subject Verb (ed)
We visited a museum last night.
She danced at the party yesterday.
They lived here last night.
Spelling tips for regular verbs:
Base Form -ED Spelling The Rule
Work Worked Most verbs end with -ed
Talk Talked
Watch Watched
Study Studied Consonant + y → change y to ied
Tidy Tidied Same rule
Stop Stopped Double consonant (CVC)
Travel Travelled Double final consonant
Change Changed Ends with e → add d
Dance Danced Ends with e → add d

Negative

We use did not (didn’t) + base verb.

The Form:

Subject + didn’t + verb + …

  • We didn’t play football yesterday.
  • He didn’t like the cake at the party.
  • They didn’t live in Australia.

Questions

We use did to make questions.

The Form:

Wh- + did + subject + verb + …?

  • Did you visit your parents last week?
  • Where did they stay last night?
  • Did you work here last year?
⚠️ Important:
In negative sentences and questions, we use the base form of the verb.
