10A – Superlative adjectives

We use the + superlative adjective to say which person or thing is number one in a group.

Examples

  • This is the oldest building in the city.
  • She’s the most confident student in the class.
  • Friday is the worst day for traffic.

After superlatives, we usually use in (not of) with places and groups:

  • the tallest tower in the world
  • the best café in my town

Form and Spelling

One-syllable Adjectives Rule
Old The oldest Just add -est
Tall The tallest
Old The oldest
Big The biggest Adjectives end with;
consonant + vowel + consonant,
double the last consonant and add -est
Hot The hottest
Fit The fittest
Nice The nicest Adjectives end with -e, just add -st
Close The closest
Busy The busiest Adjectives end with -y, delete -y, and add -iest
Dirty The dirtiest

Two or More Syllables Adjectives Rule
Interesting → The most interesting Add The most before the adjective
Beautiful → The most beautiful
Comfortable → The most comfortable

Irregular Adjectives
Good The best
Bad The worst
Far The furthest
