Unit 3 – Grammar Rules
3A – Present simple positive (+) and negative (–)
Use of the present simple
We use the present simple to talk about:
- things that are always true
- daily routines
- habits
Examples:
- I work in an office.
- They live near the city centre.
- She cooks dinner every evening.
Positive form:

Examples:
- I read a lot.
- We play football on Fridays.
- He works at home.
- She lives with her parents.
Negative form:
We make negatives with don’t or doesn’t + verb (infinitive).

Examples:
- I don’t drink coffee.
- We don’t watch TV at night.
- He doesn’t drive.
- She doesn’t like spicy food.
⚠ Important:
After doesn’t, the verb is always in the infinitive.
✔ He doesn’t work.
❌ He doesn’t works.

Examples:
- She studies economics.
- He goes to work by bus.
- It finishes at six.

3B – Present simple questions ( ? )
Form of questions
We use do / does + subject + verb.
Word order:
ASI = Auxiliary (do/does) + Subject + Infinitive
- Do you work on Sundays?
- Does she live near here?
- Do they like music?
Short answers:

❌ We do not use contractions in positive short answers.

do and does
do / does can be:
- an auxiliary verb
- Do you like English?
- Does he work here?
- a main verb
- I do my homework in the evening.
- She does yoga twice a week.

Questions with be
We put be before the subject.
- Is she from Spain?
- Are your friends here?
- How old are you?
Questions with other verbs
We use:
Question word + do / does + subject + verb
- Where do you live?
- What music does he like?
- How many languages do they speak?
