Unit 3 – Grammar Rules

3A – Present simple positive (+) and negative (–)

Use of the present simple

We use the present simple to talk about:

  • things that are always true
  • daily routines
  • habits

Examples:

  • I work in an office.
  • They live near the city centre.
  • She cooks dinner every evening.

Positive form:

Subject Verb
I / you / we / they Work
He / she / it Works

Examples:

  • I read a lot.
  • We play football on Fridays.
  • He works at home.
  • She lives with her parents.

Negative form:

We make negatives with don’t or doesn’t + verb (infinitive).

Subject Negative
I / you / we / they don’t work
He / she / it doesn’t work

Examples:

  • I don’t drink coffee.
  • We don’t watch TV at night.
  • He doesn’t drive.
  • She doesn’t like spicy food.

⚠ Important:

After doesn’t, the verb is always in the infinitive.

✔ He doesn’t work.

❌ He doesn’t works.
