9A — Present Continuous

A. Form

We form the present continuous with:

be (am / is / are) + verb + -ing

Affirmative

Subject Be Verb -ing
Iamworking now.
Heistalking on the phone.
Theyarewaiting outside.

Negative

Subject Be + not Verb -ing
Iam notworking now.
Sheis notlistening to you.
Weare nothaving dinner now.

Questions

Wh-word Be Subject Verb -ing Answer
Are you studying now? Yes, I am / No, I am not.
Is she watching TV? Yes, she is / No, she isn’t.
What are they doing? They’re talking.

B. Use

We use the present continuous for:

  • Actions happening now (at the moment of speaking)
    Examples:
    I’m studying English right now.
    They’re watching a movie in the cinema right now.
    He’s waiting outside at the moment.
  • Actions happening around now / today
    Examples:
    I’m watching a new series these days.
    They’re working on a new project nowadays.
