A1 Grammar Lesson 7
UNIT 7 – Grammar Rules
7A — Word order in questions
1. A. Questions with “be”
When be (am / is / are) is the main verb, we make questions by changing the order:
The Form:
Be + Subject …?
| Statement | Question |
|---|---|
| You are tired. | Are you tired? |
| She is late. | Is she late? |
| They are from Spain. | Are they from Spain? |
With question words, the verb still comes before the subject:
| Wh-word | Be | Subject …? |
|---|---|---|
| Where | are | you from? |
| How old | is | your brother? |
| Why | are | they angry? |
B. Questions with other verbs
When the main verb is not be, we use do / does.
The Form:
Question word + do/does + Subject + verb …?
| Wh-word | Do/Does | Subject | Verb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | Does | he | live? |
| How | Does | she | come here? |
| Why | Does | your brother | study here? |
| How | Do | they | come to school? |
| When | Do | you | finish your job? |
| How often | Do | we | have a class? |
